H. English 2089 (Honors Experience #3)
For my 3rd honors experience, I decided to take the honors section of English 2089. English has always been my favorite subject and I love being challenged in writing. For this class, the overall themes were literacy, discourse communities, and ethnographies. I found the ethnography aspect the most exciting, as I had never work on an ethnography before.
Our first paper was a literacy narrative, which involved talking about our first experiences with literacy and those who have influenced our literacy skills. I wrote a paper that was a risk for me, and I was nervous about how it would be received. Happily, my professor Gary Vaughn loved the paper and enjoyed that I took a risk. His enthusiasm for my writing made me feel more confident in taking risks with my words.
For our next paper, we wrote on the rhetoric and different writing genres for a topic that related to our majors or interests. I wrote a paper about the rhetoric and genres of articles on Common Core, which connected with an earlier honors experience I had in a class called Save Our Schools. I was happy to really delve into how different genres can discuss and even agree on the same topic, but write about it in such different ways.
Our final paper was an ethnography on a discourse community of which we were a part. I wrote about a website I am a part of that is called Tumblr; I focused on a specific aspect of the website’s community. I found difficulty in writing about something I was so familiar with in a way so others reading my paper could understand it. Though writing the paper was a challenge, I liked having an opportunity to think more critically about something that is in my daily life.
When the time came for a reflection paper on the class, I found that I had really progressed in my writing and had been more willing to write about my own experiences and myself. Through Professor Vaugn’s instruction in the classroom, I really gained in my writing and in my confidence level in writing in unfamiliar genres. I would highly recommend taking the honors section of English 2089 because it allowed me to grow in my writing experiences. Attached below are my papers for this course.
